What is it?
A system of steps that allow a newly licensed driver to gain driving skills and experience under supervision and in a gradual fashion. Why is it necessary? To reduce young and new driver collisions. Who has it? All provinces and territories (except Nunavut) and most states have some form of Graduated Licensing. Since April 1, 1994, all new drivers applying for their first car or motorcycle license enter Ontario's Graduated Licensing System (GLS).
• 8 -- 12 mos. in G1 phase + 12 mos. in G2 phase (License expires 5 years from program start) • G1 Test -- 50 km/hr city driving + G2 Test -- HWY driving component While in G1 classification, you may get your license in 8 mos. if you have completed an approved Driver Education Course and may drive on high-speed expressways, if accompanied by a licensed Driving Instructor.
